Helen Beach
Counsellor Coordinator
Having stepped into the role of counselling coordinator in May this year, my desire has been to coordinate a team who have the same passion as myself to deliver a counselling service that reflects the ethos of SAFA. I want to create a strong sense of teamwork and to work closely with the project manager to create a smooth process—from client referral right through to closing the file as a clients’ counselling comes to an end.
As a practicing counsellor one of my goals has been to make sure the counsellors feel supported while working for SAFA.
My aim is for the counsellors to know that I will be there for them, be proactive when it comes to making difficult decisions and that I will do my best to assist in any way I can.
I also feel it is of the upmost importance that the counsellors have an
understanding of the expectations I have of them. Good communication is key to
having a workforce that will deliver what SAFA needs.
Part of the counsellors’ responsibilities is to submit their paperwork on time each
month. This is paramount for gathering the information needed to show we are
working towards meeting our targets.
Over the last six months I have been involved in recruiting suitable candidates,
with the interviewing process giving me huge insight into the work SAFA does
and what we want from the counsellors we employ. My professional opinion
has been valued and challenged too, which has helped me develop and grow
within my role.
Tackling the waiting list is a priority. Now that I have got to know the ’Charity
Log’ system, having clear data to show the extent of how many people want to
access counselling means I can contribute to ways of moving towards targets—
and reducing how long clients having to wait.
The support of my colleagues as I ‘learn the ropes’ has been invaluable. As I gain
confidence in my role, the sense of satisfaction I get experiencing the difference
our service makes to the lives of those who access it is immeasurable.
